What is Virechana?
Virechana is one of the five Panchakarma procedures. After careful preparation, the patient takes herbal medicines that cause controlled purgation, clearing aggravated Pitta dosha from the body. It is always planned and supervised by a Vaidya, never done at home.
Who is it usually advised for?
Ayurveda uses Virechana mainly for Pitta-related conditions. Our Vaidyas commonly consider it for:
- Chronic skin conditions such as psoriasis, eczema and urticaria
- Hyperacidity and other chronic digestive complaints
- Some liver and metabolic conditions, alongside your regular treatment
- As a planned seasonal detox (Ritu Shodhana), especially in autumn
The steps
- Consultation and tests: the Vaidya decides whether you are fit for Virechana.
- Snehapana: for about 3 to 7 days you drink measured, increasing doses of medicated ghee.
- Abhyanga and Swedana: oil massage and herbal steam for usually 1 to 3 days.
- Virechana day: the purgative medicine is given in the morning and you are observed through the day.
- Samsarjana Krama: a graded diet over the next few days, from thin rice gruel back to normal food.
The whole process usually takes about 10 to 15 days and can be done as day-care or with admission, depending on your health.
When it may not be suitable
Virechana is not given during pregnancy, to young children, to very weak or elderly patients without modification, or with acute fever, rectal bleeding or severe dehydration. Tell the Vaidya about every medicine you take.
