What are Abhyanga and Swedana?
Abhyanga is a full-body massage with warm medicated oil, chosen by the Vaidya for your constitution (Prakriti) and condition. It is a form of external Snehana (oleation). Swedana is a group of herbal sweating therapies that usually follow Abhyanga to loosen stiffness and help the oil work.
Types of Swedana at our hospital
- Bashpa Sweda: herbal steam, with the head kept outside the steam box.
- Patra Pinda Sweda: warm cloth boluses filled with medicinal leaves, pressed and massaged over the body or a painful area.
- Potli (Pinda) Sweda: boluses of herbal powders or medicated rice, used for stiff joints and muscles.
Who is it usually advised for?
- Muscle stiffness, body aches and joint pain
- Arthritis and back or neck stiffness, together with Basti therapies
- Fatigue and poor sleep
- Preparation (Purvakarma) before Vamana, Virechana or Basti
How a session works
A session usually lasts 45 to 60 minutes: about 30 to 45 minutes of Abhyanga by trained therapists, followed by Swedana. You then rest and take a warm bath after the time the therapist advises. A course is commonly 7 to 14 days, as day-care.
When it may not be suitable
Swedana is avoided during fever, acute inflammation, bleeding disorders, pregnancy and immediately after meals, and is adjusted for people with high blood pressure or heart disease.
