Two kinds of Basti
The word Basti is used for two different groups of treatment, and both are available at our hospital:
- Local (external) Basti: a ring made of black-gram dough is fixed on the painful area and filled with warm medicated oil, which is kept there and rewarmed for a set time.
- Classical Basti (medicated enema): one of the five Panchakarma procedures, considered in Ayurveda the most important treatment for disorders of Vata.
Local Basti: which area, which condition
| Therapy | Area | Commonly considered for |
|---|---|---|
| Kati Basti | Lower back | Lower back pain, lumbar spondylosis, sciatica, disc problems |
| Janu Basti | Knee | Knee osteoarthritis, knee stiffness and pain |
| Greeva Basti | Neck | Cervical spondylosis, neck stiffness and pain |
| Shirobasti | Head (a leather or rexine cap holds the oil) | Chosen by the Vaidya for selected chronic head, sleep and nerve complaints |
A local Basti session usually takes 30 to 45 minutes and is given daily for about 7 to 14 days, as day-care. It is often combined with Abhyanga (oil massage) and Swedana (herbal steam or bolus).
Classical Basti (Panchakarma)
- Anuvasana Basti: an oil-based Basti, given in measured doses.
- Asthapana (Niruha) Basti: a decoction-based Basti made with herbs, honey, salt and oil.
- Uttar Basti: a specialised Basti given by a qualified physician through the urinary or vaginal route, for selected gynaecological and urinary conditions.
Classical Basti is given as a planned course, alternating Anuvasana and Asthapana in a schedule decided by the Vaidya, usually with supervision as a day-care or inpatient patient in our 10-bed facility.
When it may not be suitable
The Vaidya will assess you first. Local Basti may be avoided over open wounds, acute swelling or infection. Classical Basti may be postponed during diarrhoea, acute fever, bleeding from the rectum or in pregnancy, and is adapted for elderly or weak patients.
