What is Shirodhara?
Shirodhara (from shiro, head, and dhara, stream) is a classical Ayurvedic therapy in which warm medicated liquid is poured in a slow, continuous stream over the forehead. The liquid is usually a herbal oil; for some patients the Vaidya prescribes medicated buttermilk (Takradhara) or medicated milk (Ksheeradhara) instead.
Who is it usually advised for?
In Ayurveda, Shirodhara is mainly used to calm an aggravated Vata and Pitta. Our Vaidyas commonly consider it for:
- Stress, anxiety and mental fatigue
- Difficulty sleeping (insomnia)
- Tension headaches and migraine
- As supportive care alongside treatment for high blood pressure
- Some chronic scalp and skin conditions, such as psoriasis (often as Takradhara)
It is not a replacement for medicines your doctor has prescribed. Please bring your current prescriptions to the consultation.
How a session works
- Consultation: the Vaidya checks your pulse (Nadi Pariksha), history and reports, and chooses the oil or liquid.
- Preparation: usually a short head and body massage (Abhyanga).
- Dhara: you lie on the therapy table while the warm liquid flows over your forehead, typically for 30 to 45 minutes.
- Rest: you rest afterwards and are advised to avoid cold wind, a cold-water head bath and late nights on treatment days.
How many days?
Shirodhara is usually given as a course, commonly 7, 14 or 21 days, as day-care. Your Vaidya decides the length after seeing how you respond. It can also be part of a wider Panchakarma programme.
When it may not be suitable
It may be postponed or modified during fever, an acute cold or sinus congestion, very low blood pressure, or in the first months of pregnancy. Tell the Vaidya about any medical condition before starting.
