What is Vamana?
Vamana is the Panchakarma procedure for aggravated Kapha dosha. After preparation, the patient is given herbal medicines that induce controlled vomiting, which in Ayurveda clears excess Kapha from the chest and stomach. It is the most closely supervised Panchakarma procedure and is only done in hospital.
Who is it usually advised for?
Our Vaidyas consider Vamana for selected patients with Kapha-dominant conditions, such as:
- Chronic allergic rhinitis and some cases of bronchial asthma (between attacks, not during one)
- Some chronic skin conditions
- Obesity and Kapha-type metabolic problems, alongside your regular treatment
- Seasonal Kapha cleansing (usually in spring)
The steps
- Fitness check: the Vaidya assesses your strength, heart and lungs.
- Snehapana: about 3 to 7 days of increasing doses of medicated ghee.
- Preparation day: Abhyanga, Swedana and a Kapha-increasing diet.
- Vamana day: early in the morning, the medicines are given and the Vaidya supervises the whole procedure.
- Samsarjana Krama: a graded diet over the following days.
When it is not suitable
Vamana is not given to children, elderly or very weak patients, during pregnancy, or to people with heart disease, high blood pressure, bleeding disorders or during an acute asthma attack. The Vaidya may recommend a gentler alternative.
