What is Nasya?
Nasya is the Panchakarma procedure in which medicated oil, ghee or herbal juice is given through the nostrils. Ayurveda describes the nose as the doorway to the head, so Nasya is used mainly for complaints above the shoulders.
Who is it usually advised for?
- Chronic sinusitis and allergic rhinitis
- Headaches and migraine
- Neck and shoulder stiffness
- Hair fall and premature greying, with other treatment
How a session works
- A gentle face, head and neck massage with oil.
- Mild steam to the face.
- Measured drops of the medicine in each nostril while you lie with the head tilted back.
- A short massage and rest; you may be asked to gargle with warm water.
Each session takes about 20 to 30 minutes. A course is commonly 7 days, as day-care.
When it may not be suitable
Nasya is avoided straight after a meal or bath, during an acute cold or fever, in pregnancy and in young children, unless the Vaidya advises a modified form.
